update : use this post iOS 4.2.1 Custom Firmware without Baseband update – Untethered Jailberak [Feb 2012]
If you are an unlocker and know about 06.15.00 unlock method with ultrasn0w 1.2 , there is a simple way to update to iOS 4.2.1 without basebande update with pwnage tool 4.1.3 . easy unlock and jailbreak But its need you have 05.13.04 bb or below.
Tools needed
1 . Custom firmware for iphone 3Gs / 3G 4.2.1
- Download custom firmware iPhone 3Gs / {Mirror} –> [Hotfile | FileSonic]
- Download custom firmware iPhone 3G / {Mirror}–> [Hotfile | FileSonic]
2. Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b
3. Download Apple original firmware
Guide :
1. Connect your phone with PC and switch off
2. Open redsn0w and choose Original firmware.
3. If you have newboot just press “yes”
4. now click “Next”
5. Choose “Just Enter pwned DFU mode right now”
6- now click “Next” again “Next” and follow the screen.
* you can useb iReb for pwned DFU mode too.
After that open itunes and press “Shift + Restore” and choose custom firmware 4.2.1
it will finish very quickly
Once you update you firmware
1. Connect your phone with PC and switch off
2. Open redsnow and choose Original firmware
3. If you have newboot just press “yes”
4. now click “Next”
5. Choose Only “Install Cydia”
6. now click “Next” again “Next” and follow the screen.
If you r getting White Cydia Icon just switch of your phone and open redsnow choose Stock firmware 4.2.1 and choose the option “Just boot tethered right now” and click “next” again “next” then follow the screen then you will see the cydia.
Finally you can see your phones is with your old Baseband. now just you can install the ultrasn0w 1.2 from Cydia

my Itunes gives an error 2003 when its done recovering from the custom iOS. Than my iPhone reboots and it quits after you disconnect from computer and when you turn it on it says connect with iTunes.

No, i fixed it, it was something with my itunes. When it finished restoring the custom firmwire, everything was done. it was ios 4.2.1, cydia was already on it everything… it was jailbroken but not activated and not unlocked… I found this pretty perculiar but anyways;
Problem is, i want to unlock my phone, but ultrasn0w gives you battery drainage. i dont have a orginal simcard of carrier, my phone is from China…. and i live in Holland… I want to use SAM but is that possible without updating to 06.15.00 ? I tried SAM with my baseband 05.11.07 ( iphone 3G) but it didn’t work with AUTO-DETECT and iTunes keep saying invalid SIM but iPhone works fine except for the brain drainage… help ?!?!?!

I update an Iphone 3GS to ios 4.2.1, after redsn0w it start to work but the WiFI function did not work so I enter to setting to verify the firmware and everything, in that moment I note that there was not anything the baseband was NOT installed… After a few seconds it gave me a message: the iphone not received or make calls it need to be restore.

Hey, I’ve managed to restore, but I’m stuck when ‘Downloading Jailbreak Data…’ appears on the phone. I’ve tried to restore twice now but same thing happens… I have an original SIM card, therefore the phone gets through activation sign into menu. I’ve also tried ‘Just boot tethered right now’ also no progress. Can you help me please?

Hey, thanks for the tutorial; this worked great on my 3GS. One issue, though: I’m on AT&T, and the phone activated fine through iTunes and I’m getting fine signal and bars. However, I’m not getting a carrier name in the upper left of the screen like I should be. Also, my Network is displayed as “Not Available” under the About screen in general settings. Is there any way to get my carrier name back? I’ve tried MakeItMine but it didn’t work.

Yes. I’ve tried installing AT&T carrier logo from Cydia as well, but still not getting anything where the carrier name should be.
Okay, I fixed it. Here’s what I did in case anyone else is having this problem. I installed Fake Operator from Cydia to try to put some custom text where the carrier name would be, but weirdly, instead of applying my custom text, this restored the stock “AT&T” .png file (which is just the text “AT&T”). I then tried reinstalling AT&T Carrier Logo from Cydia (not the version for iPhone 4, since I have a 3GS), but this didn’t apply the logo like I wanted. So I used iPhone Browser to navigate to the System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone folder, and found a folder where the stock AT&T .png files were still present (the folder was entitled 310150 for me). I then copied the custom AT&T carrier logo .pngs from the Cydia package into this folder to replace the stock ones, and viola! My nifty at&t custom carrier logo I had back on iOS 3.x is back! My network is still showing up as “Not Available” under my About screen in the general menu under settings, but this doesn’t seem to be affecting anything. Guessing it’s just a quirk of keeping my old 4.26.08 baseband with a version of iOS that wasn’t designed for it.
Now I’m considering changing the signal bars back to the way they were in 3.x as well; I don’t like the distorted look Apple gave them after antenna-gate. Anyway, thanks again for the tutorial; my iPhone is running great after being bogged down for a while with a jailbroken iOS 3.2.1. Not having to install WinterBoard should keep things running a lot better.

Its already jail broken and unlocked.. I never cared abt the apple’s new iOs versions as I am happy with what I have now..
But my phone has suddenly started to reboot for every 3 to 5 mins.. So, I am planning to update to latest iOs version… Please let me know if the below process will work…
1. Boot in DFU mode using redsnow.
2. Use iTunes and restore using custom firmware provided by you in this page. (After restore, will I still be with my 5.13.04 baseband)??

Hello.. I got into DFU mode and restored then using custom version.. It took all its time and at the ended it said restore failed with error 29… Now my iphone is showing the USB >> iTunes picture and now also iTunes is detecting the phone in restore mode only.. If i try to restore with custom version it fails with error 21 just soon after starting to restore.. Now my iphone is stuck showing the Connect USB >> iTunes picture…

Works perfect on 3G, stuck at uploading jailbreak data, if use windows 7 you need to right click on redsnow and check compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3 and run as Administrator, then works fine….
Only problem is that as people above have black wallpaper, lock screen is fine and show image but cant set it behind icons, also try to use winterboard and no luck.
Any ideas or solution?
Solution found for missing wallpaper!
Use iPhoneBrowser or SSH, navigate to:
/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/
find:
N82AP.plist
copy to PC, use text editor and look for string:
homescreen-wallpaper
change it to:
homescreen-wallpaper
save, and copy that file to phone on same place, reboot device and all works fine
Also you can turn on multitasking with editing string:
multitasking
to
multitasking
but didn’t test that.
