Redsn0w 0.9.9b7b – Jailbreak iOS 5

On October 22, 2011, in Redsn0w, by Farbod.3f

iPhone Dev Team has released RedSn0w 0.9.9b7b which is now can jailbreak iOS 5 .

Redsn0w 0.9.9b7b – Jailbreak iOS 5

Note:
This RedSn0w jailbreak provides tethered iOS 5 jailbreak for now.
It dose not support iPad 2 and iPhone4s.

RedSn0w 0.9.9b7b Supports:

  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPad 1
  • iPhone3GS
  • iPhone4 (GSM)
  • iPhone4 (CDMA)

UNLOCKERS AND THOSE PRESERVING THEIR UNLOCKABLE BASEBANDS SHOULD STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS! You will very likely lose your unlockable baseband if you try to install iOS 5.

THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY! No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost. You will need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered now” to be able to use many things, including Cydia and Safari. If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered.

Update 1 0.9.9b5: With today’s official iOS5 release, redsn0w has been updated to 0.9.9b5 to include the public URLs for the IPSW files. This way, first-time iOS5 jailbreakers don’t need to supply the IPSW file manually. It’s still a tethered jailbreak on all except the old-bootrom iPhone3GS, and it doesn’t apply to iPad2 or the upcoming iPhone4S.

Because the jailbreak is currently only tethered for most devices, we’re not going to release a new PwnageTool yet. Instead, we’ve decided to build some of PwnageTool’s functionality into redsn0w (since you need redsn0w to “Just boot tethered” on every power cycle anyway). The new “Custom IPSW” button on the Extras screen will create a custom IPSW without the baseband update for 4.3.3 or 5.0gm (iPhone3GS and iPhone4 only, for now). Remember to NOT accidentally restore to the stock IPSW after you create the custom one! The custom one begins with NO_BB_ (for “no baseband”). On Mac iTunes, you select an IPSW by holding down the Option key while clicking “Restore”.

You must enter “Pwned DFU” mode before trying to use the NO_BB_ IPSW with iTunes (and your hosts file cannot be pointing to Cydia’s servers due to the new blob nonce mechanism they’re using in iOS5).

Version 0.9.9b5 is available only for Mac for now, until we can do more testing on the Windows version of “Custom IPSW”.

We’re currently working on a normal compatibility update for existing ultrasn0w unlockers. After that we’ll try to fix the iBooks issue on jailbroken iOS5.

Update Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 : We’ve released version 0.9.9b6 of redsn0w, with both a functional fix and cosmetic fix for iOS5 jailbreakers.  For iPhone3GS owners with the 06.15 baseband, this redsn0w eliminates the network crash you saw when using Location Services in iOS5 (in fact, you don’t even need to disable Location Services anymore during the initial setup).   The cosmetic fix is to the visual countdown you see when going into DFU mode.

It’s okay to re-run this redsn0w over an existing device jailbroken at iOS5.  Just choose “Jailbreak” again and de-select Cydia (in other words, all the checkboxes will be unchecked).  If you are lucky enough to have an old-bootrom iPhone3GS, please pre-select the IPSW first (redsn0w can’t yet auto-detect the FW version of your old-bootrom 3GS if it’s already been jailbroken).

Update Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 :  After some feedback on reddit, we’ve decided to make the initial jailbreak as quick as possible by no longer “stashing” the applications by default during the redsn0w run.  This reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (60 percent!).  However, you make up for much of that the first time you launch Cydia, which will then want to stash the applications.  You can choose whether you want redsn0w or Cydia to stash in the Preferences pane.

Update Redsn0w 0.9.9b7b: In the family of iPhone Jailbreak Tools, iPhone Dev-Team has released Redsn0w 0.9.9b7b Jailbreak iOS 5 beta. Redsn0w 0.9.9b7b is to Jailbreak iOS 5 beta on iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Redsnow 0.9.9b7b iOS 5 Jailbreak allows you to sync data+pics. Redsn0w iOS 5 beta Jailbreak is based upon an exploit established by iPhone security expert. Redsn0w 0.9.9b7b change-log is given below: beta versions to

Okay, so today I jailbroke my iPhone 4 ios 5. Everything was going great till I tried to get into Safari. I have read many web sites that say if safari does not boot correctly then I did not do a tethered boot. I have done a tethered boot many times and safari is crashing and when I go into my recent calls and hit the name to call them back it just goes back to the home screen without dialing the person. help please!

  6. Tophe says:

    Iwan-
The current jailbreak is a “tethered jailbreak” which means you need to have your phone in DFU mode connected to your computer and launch redsn0w and click “just boot tethered now”
Your phone will then work correctly (if all jailbroke apps installed are ios5 friendly)
You may want to research which apps are ios5 friendly before installing them. Improper installations can leave frustrating problems.

i managed to JB my iphone 4, but i can’t use cydia.
the cydia icon appears, but it is not the normal icon for cydia..
it is just a white box icon. what should i do?

    • lhj says:

you just need to reboot your iphone the first time after jailbreaking it to get cydia to work. i suggest downloading SBSettings from cydia so you can restart springboard manually from the notification center so you dont have to reboot all the time

Hey, I have an iPod 4G (iOS 5) and used this Redsn0w 0.9.9b7. My iPod booted fine and everything works except for..Cydia. I have the full icon on screen (not the white on) and Cydia opens every now and then to show the downloading bar at the top downloading various files as it should, however during the time where it reloads the data it crashes and every time after that it will crash during the time it is on the loading screen. I have rejailbroken and rebooted with the jailbreak twice now and the same problem is occurring. I tried to SSH into the iPod, but since the program inst installed on the iPod I cant even do that. This is the first time I have used a tethered jailbreak. Please help.

    Everything works beautifully except Safari.
Cydia, mail, everything works except safari. I have opera browser too but it would be nice if safari didn’t crash immediately every time.
I’ve rebooted tethered multiple times and it doesn’t fix anything.

I’m waiting for the 5.1 untethered also. Currently on 3gs, 5.1 jailbroken/unlocked. I installed sbsettings and have to go to safe mode to get into safari. It’s the only way at this time without reinstalling everything.
